Corporate fixed deposits

Fixed deposits issued by NBFCs and corporates, typically at rates above bank deposits, for investors who want a known payout on a known date.

Who they suit: conservative investors, retirees living off interest, and trusts or institutions with a defined income need.

How we select them: credit rating first, then the issuer’s track record and promoter background, then the rate. We will show you the rating and tell you what it means before you commit.

54EC capital gain bonds

If you have made a long-term capital gain on the sale of land or a building, Section 54EC of the Income-tax Act allows exemption where the gain is invested in specified bonds within six months of the transfer, subject to the limits and conditions in force.

Issuers include REC, IRFC, PFC, HUDCO and other notified entities. These bonds carry a five-year lock-in, are non-transferable, and pay a fixed rate of interest that is taxable in your hands.

The six-month window is strict and people miss it. If you have sold a property or are about to, talk to us early — and confirm your eligibility and the applicable limits with your chartered accountant, since this is a tax position and we are not tax advisers

Bonds

Corporate bonds, PSU bonds and listed debt, at fixed or floating rates. We look at the credit rating, the issuer, the tenure and the liquidity of the instrument before putting anything in front of you.

Bond prices move inversely to interest rates, so the market value of a bond can fall before maturity. Credit risk is real even in rated paper. Neither is a reason to avoid bonds — both are reasons to understand what you are buying.
